From $200K to True Freedom: How Moving to Mexico Changed Our Lives for the Better

For years, my husband and I lived the life that many would describe as the American dream. Together, we earned more than $200,000 annually, had stable jobs, and enjoyed all the trappings of financial security. From the outside, it looked perfect. But behind the steady paychecks and benefits, we felt weighed down by stress, long work hours, and the pressure of constantly chasing the next promotion. Stability was comforting, but it came at the cost of freedom. Eventually, we reached a breaking point and decided to make a radical change. We left our well-paying jobs, packed up our lives, and moved to Mexico. What we found there has been more valuable than anything money could buy—freedom, balance, and a sense of control over our own lives.

Life Before the Move

In the United States, our lives were structured around work. Weekdays were consumed by endless meetings, late nights at the office, and commutes that left us drained before the day even began. Vacations were short and often rushed, squeezed into the few weeks of PTO we could manage. Even with our income, the rising costs of housing, healthcare, and everyday expenses meant we were constantly budgeting and planning. We had the money, but not the time or peace of mind to enjoy it.

As much as we appreciated the financial security, it felt like our lives weren’t really ours. We were working to live, but hardly living at all. It became clear that something needed to change, and that change wouldn’t come from another promotion or a bigger paycheck.

Choosing Mexico

When we started exploring options, Mexico quickly emerged as the perfect choice. It offered affordability, a slower pace of life, and a culture that emphasizes community and connection over constant hustle. With its vibrant cities, stunning coastlines, and rich traditions, Mexico promised not only a new environment but also a new way of living.

We were drawn to the idea of being able to live comfortably without the constant pressure of high expenses. The lower cost of living meant that our savings and smaller streams of income could go much further, freeing us from the anxiety of relying on demanding jobs to sustain a certain lifestyle.

Adjusting to a New Lifestyle

The first few months were both exciting and challenging. Moving to a new country meant navigating a new language, different systems, and cultural adjustments. But as time went on, we found ourselves embracing the rhythm of Mexican life. Days that used to be spent in conference calls and cubicles were now filled with morning walks through colorful neighborhoods, afternoons at local cafés, and evenings with friends enjoying slow dinners that stretched late into the night.

Without the relentless pace of our old jobs, we discovered new hobbies and passions. We both took up cooking with fresh, local ingredients from the markets, something we never had time for before. We also began exploring Mexico’s natural beauty, from hidden beaches to mountain towns that felt worlds away from the chaos of our old routine.

Financial Freedom Beyond Salary

While our income dropped significantly after leaving our jobs, we quickly realized that money was no longer dictating our happiness. Living on less became liberating rather than limiting. With rent, food, and healthcare costing a fraction of what we paid in the US, we were able to live well without the need for six-figure salaries.

This financial freedom also gave us space to pursue things that mattered more. My husband began consulting part-time, which allowed him to choose projects he enjoyed. I started freelancing in writing and teaching English, passions that not only paid modestly but also brought me fulfillment. Neither of us feels chained to our work anymore. Instead, we feel empowered by the choices we can make.

A New Definition of Success

One of the most profound changes has been redefining what success looks like. In the US, success was measured in titles, promotions, and annual raises. In Mexico, success feels more personal—it’s measured in time spent with loved ones, the ability to live in the moment, and the freedom to design a life that reflects our values.

We no longer feel the pressure to climb the corporate ladder or to keep up with societal expectations. Instead, we’ve chosen a lifestyle that prioritizes health, happiness, and community over wealth and status. That shift has given us peace of mind we never had before.

Challenges Along the Way

Of course, the move hasn’t been without its difficulties. There are moments when we miss the conveniences of life in the US, like certain products or easy access to services. Learning a new language has been humbling, and being far from family requires effort to stay connected. But these challenges have been outweighed by the benefits. They’ve pushed us to grow, adapt, and become more resourceful.

The Blessing of Freedom

Looking back, leaving behind a combined income of over $200,000 seemed unthinkable at first. But today, we feel nothing but gratitude. The decision to move to Mexico wasn’t just about saving money—it was about reclaiming our lives. We traded stability for freedom, and in return, we gained happiness, balance, and a stronger sense of purpose.

We’re not saying this path is for everyone, but for us, it’s been a blessing. By leaving behind what society told us was security, we discovered what real security means: living a life that feels authentic and fulfilling.
