25 Facts About TV Shows That Only Real Adults Can Deal With

Everybody have fun tonight

There’s a certain point in every person’s adulthood when TV turns from “just entertainment” to something that reminds you the world is confusing, exhausting, sometimes very funny in all the wrong ways. As children, we didn’t see anything odd. But as adults? We see everything. Every unrealistic detail. Every plot hole. Every impossible apartment size.

Here are 25 TV show facts only grown-ups really know — the stuff we laugh at today because, well, we’re mature enough to get it.

1. TV characters always have massive apartments

Every sitcom has a twentysomething living in a place that costs more than your yearly salary. But we’re adults, and we know those apartments are pure fantasy.

2. People wake up looking perfect

Hair brushed, skin lit up, no pillow marks. Meanwhile, you wake up like you wrestled a bear.

3. No one works realistic hours

There are characters who have “to go to work,” but somehow they’re always off work by noon for spontaneous coffee dates.

4. Phone calls end instantly

No “bye.” No “talk soon.” They just hang up like they have an allergy to politeness.

5. People never run out of money

Fancy dinners, spontaneous getaways, fresh threads — and nary a bank notification. Adults understand: Life doesn’t work that way.

6. Nobody ever pays bills

Electricity? Water? Rent? Never mentioned. Ever.

You, meanwhile, are a little blue boat whose strokes and trajectory are all about paying the overhead on time.

7. Characters always find parking

Adults understand they could probably find parking if it were their full-time job.

8. They drink unperturbed, endless cups of coffee

(In real life, that third cup would leave you vibrating like a phone on silent.)

9. They were going to have a “fun” or “creative” job.

Writer. Photographer. Architect. Magazine editor.

Nary a payroll specialist to be found.

10. Emotions are resolved in one episode

One sad montage and they’ve magically recovered.

Adults know, of course, that it takes many months — and sometimes therapy — to get past feelings of despair.

11. Characters are not working hard enough

Cooking, dating, chilling and just generally doing cool stuff the way real folks do.

And here you are just trying to decide whether to sleep or do the dishes on your day off.

12. No one ever gets tired

You know they keep drama on deck whenever, wherever.

Adults are exhausted at the very thought of plans.

13. Everyone’s handwriting is perfect

Even in matters of life and death, the handwriting is font-like.

14. They never look at their bank apps

If they did, half the show plots would never get off the ground.

15. Public is where dramatic exes are met always

Since, it seems, the world is two streets wide.

16. Everyone answers the door immediately

As though they were lounging just behind it every hour of the day.

17. Nobody gets sick

No flu. No allergies. No headaches.

All three are given to adults before they start their day.

18. Characters who eat in restaurants and leave w/out paying

They get up and walk out like the bill is irrelevant.

19. People give speeches without stumbling

Grown-ups can’t even get takeout without overthinking.

20. They wear shoes indoors

Your feet ache just watching them.

21. No one has laundry disasters

Clothes don’t shrink, fade or get lost.

Adults understand it’s a war zone out there on Laundry Ridge.

22. Conversations are perfectly timed

Nobody ever interrupts.

Nobody ever talks over anyone.

Unrealistic!

23. Dramatic rain moments look beautiful

In reality, rain turns you into a wet mop.

24. Characters always have the perfect response

Adults know that doesn’t happen. Ever.

25. You lose a show, you feel lost, emotionally- speaking.

As a grown man, when a good show is over, you no longer know what to do with your life for like a week.

“The thing that was so beautiful about growing up, as kids we watched TV and didn’t see anything wrong. AdvertisementAs adults, we notice the unrealistic moments, impossible lifestyles and plot holes the size of a small planet.

But even with all of that, TV shows still offer us comfort and distraction, a reminder to laugh at how absurd life can be.

Maybe that’s what we love them even more for today, because being a grown-up is confusing enough and we just need a show to make it all feel like the last chorus of an ’80s prom song.
